1. THE EXORCIST [Horror movies]

The exorcist was directed by William Friedkin and released in 1973. Despite its age, this film remains a relatively terrifying and well-made classic horror film. Based on the novel of the same name, The Exorcist follows the story of a 12-year-old girl who has been possessed by a demon.

Grieved by the turn of events, the girl's mother has no choice but to seek an exorcism from the Catholic Church. Two priests come to the aid of the girl. However, getting the demon out of the girl is not an easy task.

When the film was released in 1973, it quickly attracted an audience and certainly made an impression. In fact, some of the scenes seemed so realistic that viewers had adverse physical reactions. Despite audience reactions, the film was still rated R-rated by the MPAA rating board.

The rating, and the fact that the film was extremely shocking for its time, caused some countries to ban the film for obscenity. Despite the controversy, The Exorcist became the first horror movie to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and ended up securing the Best Sound Mix and Best Adapted Screenplay. Today, there are very few people, horror fanatics or not, who will not recognize The Exorcist theme.

2. GET OUT [Horror Movies 2019]

After its 2017 release, this American horror movie has quickly become one of the genre's most popular movies. Get Out was written and directed by Jordan Peele and follows the story of a black photographer, Chris Washington, and when he meets the parents of his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage in Armitage, a rural community in upstate New York.

While Armitage seems like a quiet community, Chris soon begins to notice strange behavior from residents, and even from his own girlfriend, Rose. As Chris struggles to figure out exactly what seems so strange in the community, it soon becomes clear that things are much more twisted and abnormal than anyone could have imagined. As things escalate, it soon becomes clear that the people at Armitage are not what and who they seem.

Get Out first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017, and hit theaters about a month later through Universal Pictures, and soon received acclaim as the best horror film. Get Out was nominated for multiple awards and won the People's Choice Award for the themes of the film.

The movie is definitely scary and is based on a number of popular horror themes and keeps you guessing until the end.

3. A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET [Best Horror Movies]

When it comes to choosing the best horror movie, it's pretty hard to ignore the classics. A Nightmare on Elm Street was released in 1984, almost forty years ago, and directed by Wes Craven. The film had incredible success with several sequels, including A Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy’s Revenge and New Nightmare, and it even spawned a franchise with TV series novels and even crossover movies like Freddy Vs. Jason. If you ask most adults today, and even many children, they have definitely heard of Freddy Kruger. However, this can only be due to its popularity as a Halloween costume.

The original story is based on a monster, Freddy Kruger, who after being burned alive for murdering a child, becomes a mixture of avenging spirit and demonic entity. Determined to keep killing, Freddy targets a group of teenagers.

Perhaps the scariest thing about Freddy Kruger is his tendency to hit in dreams. For most people, dreaming tends to be a mysterious experience at best, regardless of whether or not they involve the potential for murder, making Freddy's ability to kill in the dream landscape quite terrifying. Perhaps it was this fact that gained Freddy's notoriety as a classic horror figure.

4. THE CONJURING [Best Horror Movies on Netflix]

The Conjuring follows the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are paranormal investigators who are said to have dealt with a number of supernatural phenomena, including possession and evil spirits. Set in 1971, The Conjuring involves Roger and Caroly Perron who, upon moving to a farm in Rhode Island with their family, discover that their home is haunted.

Things start slowly, with little caveats that would catch the attention of any supernatural expert. Of course, the Parrons have no idea what they're dealing with until things go from bad to worse and it's clear that an evil spirit is involved.

It is then that the couple contacts the demonologists Ed and Lorraine, who agree to take the case. After an initial investigation, it is clear that there are spirits in the house and that some of them are malicious.

The history of the house becomes the key to unraveling the mystery of the obsession and saving the Parron children, who seem to be the target of the spirit. Meanwhile, Ed and Lorraine are also determined to record the experience to provide evidence of the supernatural.

Can the Warrens discover the identity of the spirit and save the Parron family and themselves before it is too late?

5. US [Horror Movies on Netflix]

Us begins in 1986 and follows the story of a young woman, Adelaide, who meets her double in a hall of mirrors during a family vacation in Santa Cruz. Years later, Adelaide returns to Santa Cruz as an adult with her husband, Jason, and their children.

Unfortunately for Adelaide and her family, things start to get sinister pretty quickly. When Jason and the rest of the family begin to see things they can't explain, Adelaide is forced to confront memories of her past to save her future. Adelaide soon learns that her doppelganger Red has a family of her own. The Red family, however, is not exactly welcome or healthy.

As Red's story unfolds, it turns out that she is far from the only doppelganger and that Red and Adelaide share much more than their looks. As things get dangerous, Adelaide will do anything to save her family. But will they ever escape?

6. THE RING [Horror Movies 2018]

Released in 2002, The Ring is a horror movie based on the American supernatural that was directed by Gore Verbinski and is actually a remake of the 1998 Japanese horror film Ring. Upon its release, The Ring received much critical acclaim, sparking The Ring Two and Rings. The success of the film also helped pave the way for new English versions of popular Asian horror movies, including The Grudge.

At this point, The Ring is well known to both horror fans and non-horror fans alike. The film is set in Seattle, follows a journalist, Rachel Keller, who is investigating the death of her younger sister, Ruth. According to Ruth's friend Becca, Ruth died violently after watching a mysterious video a week earlier.

Rachel travels to where Ruth and her friends have found the tape and watch the video, after which she receives a phone call and the "seven days" message. To get to the bottom of this, Rachel recruits her ex-husband and her son's father, Noah Clay, who also watches the tape. The two try to reach the end of the video and the ghost that now seems to be chasing them.

Eventually, they discover more about the video footage and even learn the identity of the ghost. However, saving the ghost may not be enough.

7. THE OTHERS [New Horror Movies]

The Others is a 2001 version of a Spanish gothic a supernatural psychological horror film, although it was released in Spanish and English. The film is the brainchild of Alejandro Amenabar, who wrote, directed, and even scored the film and is starring Nicole Kidman.

The film was incredibly well-received at the time and even became the first English language film to receive the Goya Award, the Spanish National Film Award, even though Spanish was not spoken in the film. The film is still extremely popular today and is even occasionally referenced in pop culture.

The Others is an exciting new version of the idea for the classic ghost story, set in 1945, just after World War II. The protagonist, Grace Stewart, is the mother of two young children, Anne and Nicolas, who suffer from a rare skin condition that makes them extremely sensitive to light. Three new servants also live in the house, having worked at the house at some point in the past.

Things start to get weird when strangers are seen in the house and Grace's husband, who is believed to have died in the war, returns home for a short time. Things get weirder and stranger and Grace convinces herself that the house is haunted. Finally, however, things are definitely not what they seem.

8. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD [Good Horror Movies]

When it comes to horror movies, you simply can't ignore a classic like Night of the Living Dead, the original 1968 horror movie that was directed, written, and filmed by George A. Romero. The film became the franchise, which then received five subsequent releases, including a new 1990 version directed by another horror icon Tom Savini.

The story follows a couple who are trapped in a rural home as their quiet neighborhood turns into a breeding ground for cannibalistic corpses.

While Night of the Living Dead may seem a bit old school to younger audiences, it's definitely a horror classic and, in many ways, the great-grandfather of zombie movies. As one of the first zombie movies, Night of the Living Dead brought the idea of meat ...

eating zombies on the big screen. Most of our favorite zombies may not be here today if Night of the Living Dead hadn't been successful.

While the special effects are pretty rudimentary, based on its release in the 1960s, the movie is still pretty creepy and definitely a must-see for zombie movie fans. If you can't deal with black and white and want something a little more advanced, check out the remake from the 1990s.

9. CARRIE [Best Horror Movies 2019]

If you haven't heard of Carrie, you're definitely missing out! Released in 1976, Carrie was based on a Stephen King's novel of the same name, and quickly caught the attention of fans. The film was actually cited as an example of great book-to-film adaptations, which historically is a rather difficult title to achieve.

Mixing horror, the supernatural, and the terrors of bullying in high school still resonates today with viewers. In fact, Carrie was one of the first popular movies in the United States to be based almost directly on the negative effects and consequences of bullying.

Carrie follows the story of Carrie White, a 16-year-old teenager who lives with her ultra-religious mother. While things are difficult at home, things at school are even worse, as Carrie is ruthlessly bullied by her peers. The positive side of Carrie is the fact that she appears to possess telekinetic powers. While Carrie fears her abilities at first, she soon begins to use her new power to take control and take revenge.

Carrie is quite unique as a horror character because she is so identifiable. Life is difficult when you are sixteen years old, and having strict parents in addition to the problems at school can make things even more difficult. So when Carrie has a supernatural collapse in her high school, it's hard to decide whether to be scared or sympathetic.

The film was actually remade in 2013, which also features a large cast and modernized special effects. However, we are still going to go with the classic in this case. Of course, you can always see both!

10. IT [Good Horror Movies on Netflix]

When a movie is based on a Stephen King novel, you know it is going to be very good or very bad. Now, depending on how you feel about the book-to-movie adaptations, you may have hated or loved this one.

IT, or IT: Chapter One, is a supernatural horror movie based on a 1986 novel of the same name. The film first aired in 2017 and quickly became a huge success. Follow the story of a group of children in Derry, Maine, as they try to unravel a series of mysterious disappearances that have affected their small town.

The movie actually begins with a boy, George, who follows a sailboat that his brother Bill had made while sailing down the drain. By following the paper boat, George ends up meeting a clown named Pennywise, who prompts the boy to go down the drain and play. The clown eats the child, which, for the clown, is simply a habit.

For most children, clowns are fun or somewhat scary characters. After all, clowns are adults in costumes and a face full of makeup. Pennywise is definitely an intimidating figure, especially when you consider his multiple rows of sharp teeth. The film promises a sequel, which hopefully will enjoy the same success.

Terror first appeared in the form of silent films in the late 1890s with works by French filmmaker Georges Melles. While the first horror movies were silent, as well as black and white, their intriguing storylines caught the attention of large audiences.

Soon, best-selling horror books like Dracula and Frankenstein became adaptations for the big screen. As movie production evolved, horror movies saw an increase in gripping sound and better clothing. The 1960s is a remarkable decade in horror movie history, due in part to the release of Michael Powell's Peeping Tom movie.
